W.O.W.(Word of the Week): Connection
Hi everybody, Barbara Cookson here with the Happy, Healthy Being Blog Word of the Week. Thanks so much for watching! This week's word is connection.
This week I was privileged to be at a retirement celebration for my beautiful friend, Carol, who is retiring from a nearly 40 year career as a nurse. I was struck by the wonderful connections this woman has made over the course of her career. There were family and friends and coworkers there and sentiments were read from people who were her patients 30 years ago wishing her well in her retirement. I started thinking about all the connections we make every day. We connect with spouses, kids, our friends, the dog. Sometimes we connect with perfect strangers with just a glance or a smile or sometimes it's with a formal handshake and and introduction.
Brene Brown says "I define connection as the energy that exists between people when they feel seen, heard, and valued; when they can give and receive without judgment; and when they derive sustenance and strength from the relationship". Carol is a master at connection and it shows in the love that was shared with her on her retirement. But what about our connection to self? As a massage therapist, I sometimes work with clients who have lost that connection to their own being. Haven't we all felt disconnected sometimes? Maybe a little scattered or pulled in different directions, not feeling grounded? In my Bodyflow class, we often practice feeling connected to our breath. Feeling our breath and relaxing our bodies. Our breath is a great connector of our mind and body. Here's a quote from Armand Dimele: "when people go within and connect with themselves, they realize they are connected to the universe and they are connected to all living things".
I really feel that it's when we are grounded and connected in ourselves that we can cultivate the best connections with others. Deborah Day says in her book, Be Happy Now: "encourage, lift and strengthen one another. For the positive energy spread to one will be felt by us all. For we are connected, one and all".
The word of the week is connection. Be happy, be healthy and have a fantastic week!
